Gift Guide #2: For the Guys

My brother and dad are consistently the hardest people on my list to shop for; they already have everything (and I do mean everything) they need for their hobbies, and typical men’s gift guides seem to have a far different type of man in mind than the ones in my life. I’ve learned to think creatively about gifts for them, and have shared a few of my favorite ideas below; please share yours in the comments!

Gear for Man’s Best Friend

If there are dog parents on your Christmas list, gifts for their pups are a great way to go. BarkBox will deliver a monthly box of toys and treats and offers gift subscriptions for one, three, six, and twelve months starting at $35. If you prefer to think outside the box, a GoPro harness ($39) will give the guy in your life an opportunity to see things from his dog’s point of view. And if he’s the outdoorsy type, a packable dog first aid kit ($35) will help keep his pup safe through all kinds of adventures.

Framed Photos

Most of the guys I know would never go to the effort of framing a photo, but would love to have a favorite picture hanging in their office or home. Raid their Facebook albums, dig through old family photos, or ask their friends for help finding a photo, then have it custom-framed by Framebridge (starting at $39), or DIY with classic gallery frames (starting at $16) or acrylic versions (starting at $79).

Throwback Toys

Growing up, my uncles were often as delighted by my brother’s and my new Christmas toys as we were. If the guys on your list had favorite toys as children, these can make great gifts today. Legos and Nerf guns are classics, and while the NES (and SNES) Classic is hard to come by, you can get an original Nintendo Entertainment System (and games) from a variety of resellers.

Experiences

If you want to be sure you’re not giving him something he already has, gifting an experience is a great way to go. Airbnb recently introduced an Experiences category, offering unique activities in a variety of cities – he could learn to sail in Seattle ($69), be a DJ for a day in NYC ($95), or master the craft of beer-making in L.A. ($60). You could plan an experience for him in a city he’s planning to visit soon, or choose one in his hometown.
